Shopify vs Custom Website for a Small Brand

The real choice is between a Shopify theme, a custom designed Shopify store and a fully custom build. How to pick, what each costs in Canada, and when custom pays off.

For most small product brands, Shopify is the right foundation. It handles checkout, payments, inventory, hosting and security for a monthly fee, and a custom design built on top of it can look and perform like a fully custom site. Build fully custom only when your business does something Shopify cannot do well, because you then own the checkout, the security and the upkeep yourself.

The question is usually framed as Shopify versus custom, but that hides the real choice. Most brands are not choosing between a template and a hand built platform. They are choosing how much custom design to put on top of Shopify. This guide is for founders and ecommerce leads making that call.

Shopify vs custom: what are the three real options?

The middle column is where most small brands that care about their brand should land.

What does Shopify cost in Canada?

At the time of writing, Shopify's Canadian pricing page lists:

PlanPaid monthlyPaid yearly
Basic$49 CAD a month$37 CAD a month
Grow$132 CAD a month$99 CAD a month
Advanced$517 CAD a month$389 CAD a month
PlusFrom $3,400 CAD a month

On top of the plan, budget for apps, a theme if you buy one, and payment processing. Shopify also charges a transaction fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus if you use a third party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, so check that before you choose a payment setup.

Shopify Canada plan prices in CAD a month, billed monthly then yearly: Basic $49 or $37, Grow $132 or $99, Advanced $517 or $389, Plus from $3,400. Extra fee with a third party payment provider: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, 0.2% on Plus.
Shopify's Canadian plan prices in CAD and the extra fee for third party payment providers, from Shopify's pricing page, accessed 9 October 2026. Prices change; check the live page.

The build is a separate cost. Impeka's 2026 Canadian pricing guide puts ecommerce builds at $10,000 to $60,000 CAD or more, which I covered in what a small business website costs in Canada.

When is Shopify the right choice?

Shopify is the sensible default when:

  • You sell physical or digital products with standard options like size, colour or bundles.
  • You want checkout to just work. Shopify looks after payments, hosting and security.
  • Your team needs to run the store day to day. Adding products, running sales and managing orders are built in.
  • You want to sell in more than one place. Shopify's own pricing page pitches selling "online, in person, and in AI chats" from the same system.
  • You would rather spend your budget on the brand than on infrastructure.

When does a custom build make sense?

A fully custom build earns its cost when:

  • Your product logic is unusual. Complex configurators, quote based pricing, rentals, or workflows that apps handle poorly.
  • Commerce is a small part of the site. A content led brand with a handful of products may be better served by a custom site with a simple checkout.
  • You need deep integration with your own systems, such as a client portal or your own inventory software.
  • You have the budget to maintain it. A custom store needs someone responsible for keeping it secure and up to date for as long as it runs.
  • You want to own the whole platform. On Shopify you rent the checkout and the system underneath, pay its fees for as long as you stay, and move on its terms if you ever leave.

There is a middle path called headless Shopify, where Shopify runs products and checkout and a custom built site sits in front. It gives more design and performance control, with a bigger build and more to maintain. Most small brands do not need it.

Can a Shopify store look premium?

Yes. A theme is where the design starts. It doesn't decide where it ends.

Tecton Ketones is a good example from our own work. Their product is science backed, and their buyers arrive skeptical. We built their site on Shopify, with a custom design, a design system and campaign creative, and the published result is an evidence first site that scores 100 on desktop speed. In the founder's words, "The site is easy to evolve, and it's given us a strong foundation as we continue to grow." You can see the work in the Tecton Ketones case study.

Shopify handled checkout, payments and hosting.

What should you ask before deciding?

  1. What does our product need that a standard store does not? If the answer is "nothing", choose Shopify.
  2. Which apps would we need, and what do they cost each month? Five apps at modest prices add up.
  3. Who will run the store day to day? Choose the platform they can use well.
  4. What is the total first year cost? Build, plan, apps, payment fees and upkeep together. I explain the running costs in what website maintenance costs each month.
  5. How fast do we need to launch? Building on Shopify takes checkout and payments out of the build, which usually shortens it. My guide to how long a website takes covers what moves the date.

If your current store runs on WordPress and WooCommerce, the question of whether to stay is a separate one, and I tried to answer it fairly in is WordPress still worth it.

How we approach it at Embark

We build both. Tecton Ketones runs on Shopify; most of our other published work is custom built in Next.js. A Shopify store is not one of our listed packages, so like every project it is scoped and quoted after a short conversation. For a fully custom build, our Custom Website System is where we choose the technical architecture after discovery, based on what the site has to do and who will run it.

Before Embark I was Director of E-commerce and Digital Marketing at Roots, so I lean towards the store your team can run on a Tuesday afternoon.

If you are weighing the two, send us a brief and we will reply within one business day with a recommended engagement, timeline and scope. Or start with a free website audit of your current store.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify better than a custom website?

For most small product brands, yes. Shopify handles checkout, payments, inventory, hosting and security for a monthly fee, and a custom design on top of it can look fully bespoke. A custom build is better only when your business does something Shopify cannot handle well, even with apps.

How much does Shopify cost per month in Canada?

At the time of writing, Shopify's Canadian pricing page lists Basic at $49 CAD a month billed monthly, or $37 a month billed yearly; Grow at $132 or $99 a month; Advanced at $517 or $389 a month; Plus from $3,400 CAD a month. Apps, themes and payment processing are extra.

Can a Shopify store look premium and custom?

Yes. A Shopify store can have a fully custom design, its own design system and fast pages. The theme is only where the design starts. What you give up is control over the checkout and the platform underneath; how the brand looks stays yours.

When does a custom ecommerce build make sense?

When your product logic is unusual, such as complex configurators, custom pricing or multi system workflows that apps cannot handle well, or when content matters far more than the catalogue. Remember that you then own checkout, security and upkeep yourself.

What is headless Shopify?

It uses Shopify for products, cart and checkout, while the storefront is a separate custom site. It gives more design and performance control, at the cost of a bigger build and more to maintain. Most small brands do not need it.
